The second best pun I’ve ever encountered in the wild was when I was walking down the street in a “hip” part of Seattle and saw a couple of Budweiser cans thrown into a bush. And I said to a random stranger walking nearby “damn, the local beer harvest is really poor this year”. And the random stranger responded “give it time, they’re only buds”.

Somehow this thing got 1k notes while the previous post, which was about the best pun I’ve ever encountered in the wild got 3 notes. Anyway: I was TAing an electrostatics lab. The experiment was to see what happens when you rub wool on a bunch of rods of different materials and then bring the rods near scraps of paper.
One student’s lab report had this observation on what happens when you try to charge up a metal rod: “paper remains stationery”

The United States Government was found guilty of his murder in a civil trial in 1999 that his family fought for years.
He spoke out against police brutality, capitalism, and war.
He believed that white moderates were and are the greatest threat to civil rights, moreso than any hate group.
He was arrested over 10 times.
He was considered a dangerous radical by the majority of white Americans.
He refused to condemn rioters, because “a riot is the language of the unheard.”
Any white person who voted for Trump who tries to use MLK or his words as a rhtetorical tactic to justify their bigotry and complain about people protesting can personally come to my apartment in the next 24 hours for an ass-kicking.
Here’s a MLK quote I’d love to see white people share.
“Whites, it must frankly be said, are not putting in a similar mass effort to reeducate themselves out of their racial ignorance. It is an aspect of their sense of superiority that the white people of America believe they have so little to learn.”
People are so weird. Someone popped one of these guys opened, looked at that mess, and thought to themselves “well dang diddly gosh, that might make someone’s neck look absolutely sublime” and just slapped ‘em on a necklace.
Tell your kids you’re proud of them. I hardly ever heard “I’m proud of you.” I hardly ever heard that growing up. Instead of “I’m proud of you for working hard and doing as well as you did,” I got “Why didn’t you work harder and do better?” It left me feeling like nothing I ever did would be good enough and that the hard work I did put forth meant nothing.
So when your kid has done their best, tell them you’re proud of them.
Bayard Rustin was an openly gay Black man who was Martin Luther King’s right hand man. He planned the Million Man March and was subject to scrutiny for his sexuality and deemed a “deviant” and “pervert”.
Bayard Rustin can be found in nearly every picture of MLK yet he has undoubtedly been erased from history. We have to fix that.
Well then, let’s bring that name back.

Yeah he was literally the guy who was the head of planning the March on Washington.

stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizens Councillor or the Ku Klux Klanner but the white moderate
who is more devoted to order than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace
which is the presence of justice; who constantly says, “I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can’t agree with your methods
of direct action”; who paternalistically feels that he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom; who lives by the myth of
time; and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a “more convenient season.” Shallow understanding from people of
good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more
bewildering than outright rejection.”
He wasn’t wrong. It is, sadly, still true today.
“…who is more devoted to order than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice.” We talk about this in seminary all the time: peace that is won by one side holding its foot on the other side’s throat is not peace. When we pray for peace, we must pray for peace with justice, never at the cost of justice, made by silencing the oppressed.
Fellow white people, don’t just reblog or share mlk jr.’s more palatable “hate cannot drive out hate” type quotes and ignore the fact that he also said challenging things like this. We must hold ourselves accountable. We must not be lukewarm. And there is never a “more convenient season” to act to secure rights for all people – the time is now.
He also had a speech to the APA that openly called out white people for caring more about “riots” and damaged property than the fact that Black people were suffering under institutional violence.
He called out white people regularly for their lack of empathy for Black lives and their continuance to spout respectability at Black people than hold the white policymakers accountable for their racism.
